Surprisingly, the world’s largest sanctuaries are not the Egyptian pyramids or gothic Catholic cathedrals in Europe. The world’s largest temple is located in Cambodia. You can easily get there from Thailand and this trip will leave a most lasting impression. Welcome to one of the wonders of the world – the Angkor temple complex! Built in the XI century, Angkor used to be the capital of the ancient Khmer Empire and later in time was seized and destroyed by Siamese.

The inhabitants left the town and it was abandoned for years, guarded and redesigned by nature. It has turned into a real enchanted forest with the magnificent temples strangled by enormous tentacle-like airy roots of the gigantic trees. Angkor was re-discovered by European scientists only in the 19th century. The majestic ruins make a stunning impression.

At present, the city takes up the area of 200 square kilometers and over 100 temples and palaces are located here. The aerial view of Angkor reveals its resemblance with a sky map. Curiously, this mysterious place inspired Rudyard Kipling’s creation of his famous “Jungle Book” stories and their character Mowgli.

Cambodia has a lot of hidden treasures: Angkor Wat with its amazing religious anaglyphs and steep stairs, Angkor Thom, a unique city-within-a-city, Prasat Bayon with its enormous faces wearing sad smiles, Tha Prom which became famous as a location for the film Tomb Raider, starring Angelina Jolie. This will be your once-in-a-lifetime experience.
