Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has been proclaimed the new King of Thailand. He is the tenth monarch of the Chakri dynasty.
The prince ascended to the throne during a ceremony held at the Grand Palace on 1 December, 50 days after the death of his father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The prince had delayed his elevation for 50 days following the King’s death to observe a period of mourning.
The new King will be known as Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun, or Rama X. A coronation will be conducted next year following the cremation of King Bhumibol's remains.
World leaders have already congratulated the new monarch and wished Thailand peace and prosperity.
