Thailand's is preparing for the funeral of King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX), the nation’s most revered man. The country has been in mourning since his death on 13 October 2016.
The royal funeral will take place between 25 and 29 October. On October 25, a merit-making ceremony will be held at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace.
On 26 October, cremation will take place at Sanam Luang in Bangkok. This day has been declared a public holiday so that people can attend the funeral and pay homage to the late King. His body will be transferred to a crematorium being built at Sanam Luang.
On 27 October, a ceremony to collect the royal relics will be held at the royal crematorium, and on 28 October, a merit-making ceremony for the relics of the late King will take place at the Dusit Maha Prasat Throne Hall.
On 29 October, a royal ceremony will be held to enshrine the royal relics at the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall. The ashes of the late King will be interred at Wat Rajabopit and Wat Bowon Niwet.
On 26 October, thousands of people will gather at Sanam Luang, and in Khao San Road to bid farewell to the late King.
The Grand Palace and The Temple of the Emerald Buddha will be closed to visitors during October.
Foreign tourists are requested to be respectful during the national mourning and adhere to etiquette. Those tourists close to the Royal Palace are advised to dress appropriately. Please make sure that knees, elbows, and shoulders are covered, and wear black or grey attire.
