Smoking, including the smoking of electronic cigarettes, will be prohibited on 24 Thai beaches commencing 1 February. Initially, the ban will apply to popular beaches in Hua Hin, Pattaya, Phang Nga, Phuket, Koh Samed, Koh Samui, and Koh Lanta Yai. Plans are for it to eventually be enforced throughout country.
Special smoking areas for tobacco users will be arranged. Violators could face a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of THB 100,000 (around US $3,000), or both.
