Chiang Rai is the northernmost province of Thailand, which is becoming increasingly popular among tourists thanks to its unique natural surroundings and fascinating heritage. The first signs of Thai culture appeared in this area, which, along with reasonably-priced services in the capital city of the same name, make it one enjoyed by all as a vacation destination.
Location
Chiang Rai is located in the country’s north, approximately 820 kilometers from Bangkok. Thanks to well-developed transportation infrastructure, travel by car, bus, or plane is trouble-free.
Beach Vacation
There is no access to the sea from this province. For tourists wanting to take in the north while in Thailand, it is recommended that time spent in the south be booked also.
Sights
The Chiang Rai province is rich in natural, cultural, and historical attractions. The famous Golden Triangle is located here, a place on the Mekong River where the borders of three countries – Thailand, Burma, and Laos – converge. The northernmost point of Thailand is the border town Mae Sai, just an hour’s drive from Chiang Rai, from which an incredible landscape featuring Laos and Myanmar opens up before your eyes. Mae Sai is also known for its Opium Museum. Not that long ago, the world's biggest heroin business flourished within the borders of the Golden Triangle.
Landscapes of the province as a whole are particularly attractive. Bosky mountain tops are interspersed with colorful valleys, while the Doi Luang National Park boasts magnificent caves and waterfalls. The ethnic villages of the Karen, meaning "long-necked", and Akha people are also very exotic.
In addition, the Doi Tung Royal Villa is located in Chiang Rai, with its luxurious botanical garden often referred to as the Switzerland of Thailand. Finally, Wat Rong Khun, known as the White Temple, one of the most ambitious and original buildings of the modern age, is located within easy reach of the capital city.
Entertainment and Active Leisure
The movers and shakers will love this area for its abundance of activities, such as golf, mountain hiking, and wallclimbing in Boomerang Park – located just 3 km from Chiang Rai. For those more interested in culture, this nearly 850-year old city offers monuments, temples, and museums galore. The Night Market presents wonderful local specialties and products made by Chiang Rai craftsmen, which you can check out after visiting any number of inexpensive local restaurants and cafés featuring simply fabulous food.
